Information on Safety Testing

If you are undertaking any re-wiring or wiring of an electrically powered item (not charged by battery or usb or a self-contained unit that has it's own electrics) it is recommended you get the product PAT (Portable Appliance Test) tested by a qualified person.

Contact local electricians to find someone suitable to carry out the tests - they are very low cost but some companies might charge for a batch of tests as a result (the person I use does 40 tests for £40 so I try to do a few pieces together) but you might be fortunate to find someone who is happy to pop in and do individual tests for you as needed.

PAT testing is not, in itself, a legal requirement or obligation.

However, current UK legislation states that businesses must maintain electrical equipment in a safe condition.

They also have a legal responsibility to ensure the safety of employees and the public.

Because PAT testing is one of the most effective ways to do this, particularly for high risk or large, complex environments, it has become a standard way of meeting this legal obligation.
